About Paula Modersohn-Becker's Art
During her brief but prolific career, Paula Modersohn-Becker created a large body of work that includes portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and self-portraits. Although she is best known for her paintings of peasant women and children, she also explored a wide range of other subjects, including the nude. She was deeply influenced by the work of Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin, and also by the bold colors and simplified forms of the Fauves. In 1904, she traveled to Morocco, where she was further inspired by the vibrant colors and patterns of Islamic art. These influence are evident in her use of color and her bold, expressive brushwork.
