About Paul Gauguin's Art
Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist who was active for most of his adult life in the South Pacific, especially in Tahiti. His art is characterized by its strong colors and bold patterns.Gauguin's art is often categorized as Primitivism, a movement which arose in the late 19th century in reaction to the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the modern city. Primitivist artists sought to revive the simplicity and spiritual purity of pre-industrial cultures, often through the depiction of so-called "primitive" subjects like Gauguin's Tahitian women. However, Gauguin's approach to Primitivism was unique in that he did not simply copy the appearance of Tahitian life, but instead used Tahitian imagery to express his own ideas about art, religion, and sexuality.
