About Henri Rousseau's Art
Rousseau's style was highly individualistic. His colors were sometimes garish and his compositions were often naïve. Rousseau was fascinated by the jungle and much of his work features animals and plants in an exotic setting. His use of color and simplified forms give his work a childlike quality.Rousseau's paintings were not well-received during his lifetime. Critics mocked his style and his lack of training. However, in the 20th century, his work began to be appreciated for its unique qualities. His work is now included in major art collections around the world.
